Threats and threatening behaviour

    If an individual shows threatening behaviour:
    • Is clearly irate, unruly or seems aggressive
    • Has impaired or garbled speech
    • Bizarre, strange or inappropriate behaviour
    • Threatens to harm another person or property
    Keep Calm
    • Speak calmly and politely, even if they don't
    • Ask for specific complaints to be put in writing
    • Try to divert attention from the person
    • Give the person time to run down, don't interrupt
    • Be receptive to problem solving
    • Don't start arguing or challenging the person
    • Avoid thratening, daring or taunting
    • Do not touch or push the person
    If you do not feel comfortable in the situation, ask for help
    • Talk to a colleague that is close by
    • Stand up and seek assistance in an adjoining room
    • Call 1-1-2 if you feel the need for police assistance
      • State your name
      • Say where you're calling from
      • Describe the situation
    If you become aware of a threatening situation
    • Sometimes it's enough to disrupt the situation to enter and offer assistance
    • Be supportive but be careful not to make things worse
